The number of Stray Dogs in India are increasing, and at some point of your day you usually notice them on streets.
They could be starving or even hurt. Life for a dog is difficult on the streets and they need to be cared about. When you approach them, stray dogs can sometimes be defensive or unreceptive because of prior abuse from people, neglect, sickness or because of their behavior in general.
Hence, there are a few steps you need to know while dealing with a Stray Dog.
Understand the urgency of the situation
If you see an unattended dog on the street and detect that the dog is starving, hurt or needs assistance, do not immediately approach the dog. Wait for a few minutes and observe the dog. If you find the dog to be approachable and less aggressive, attend the dog. Examine the dog in a safe place ie. at a side of the road or a footpath. Understand the need of the situation and act accordingly.
Feed the dog
Most of the stray dogs you'll find are starving and looking around for food. They get so engrossed with the food-search that they actually ignore the traffic on the roads, the speed at which the vehicles are passing and this increases the likeliness of a dog meeting with an accident. So, feed one stray dog everyday. The first approach towards any stray dog should be by feeding them milk, or offering them a bowl of water, rice, etc.
Look for any sign of an injury
Stray dogs are homeless, driven over, bite by another dog or may be affected by some disease. They either could need first aid or attention of vet depending on the seriousness of the situation/injury. In such cases, either you can assist the dog and bring him to a vet or call the local NGO that takes care of stray dogs, wait until they arrive and make sure the dog has got the required attention.
Follow up with the local NGO who has taken the responsibility of the dog. Check if the dog is okay and if there is any assistance needed.
